Walk-in freezers

Walk-in freezers, insulated floor included

Holding 0°F to -10°F, with the heavy-duty aluminum insulated floor, the pre-wired door heater and the electric-defrost evaporator a freezer needs. Six standard indoor packages with the refrigeration included, or built to your dimensions.

Quick answer

A walk-in freezer holds frozen product. We set the ideal holding temperature for walk-in freezers at 0°F to -10°F, and the standard packages are specified to hold -10°F.

Floors are included in all walk-in freezers. Concrete is not an insulator: a sub-freezing box on a bare slab freezes the moisture under it and the slab heaves and cracks — underneath an installed freezer. The insulated floor is what stops that, which is why it is never optional on a freezer.

In every package

What comes in the package

A freezer package carries everything a cooler package does, plus the four items a sub-freezing box cannot do without: the insulated floor, the door heater, the pressure relief vent and electric defrost.

The box

  • Panels: 4″ insulation, 2009 EISA compliant, 26 gauge stucco-embossed Acrylume inside and out. Tongue-and-groove, cam-lock action, no wood perimeter, NSF Listed.
  • Heavy-duty aluminum insulated floor — included.
  • Door: standard flush-closing door with a 34″ × 76″ opening in a reinforced door frame — heavy-duty hinges, magnetic door gasket, door closer, inside safety release, and a heavy-duty latch with locking key.
  • Pre-wired door heater so the door and frame do not ice up and freeze shut.
  • Mounted pressure relief vent — equalizes the box after the door closes so it does not pull a vacuum against the next person opening it.
  • Lighting and controls: pre-wired light switch, vapor-proof light fixture and a dial thermometer.
  • Listings: UL; MEA — New York City; State of Oregon; City of Houston, Texas building code agency.

The refrigeration

  • Remote indoor condenser / compressor with drier and sight glass, 208-230/60/1.
  • Solenoid valve and coil.
  • Defrost timer.
  • Adjustable thermostat.
  • Low-profile electric-defrost evaporator with thermostatic expansion valve, 208-230/60/1.
  • Sized for freezer duty: the 6×6 freezer package carries a 1 HP system where the 6×6 cooler carries ½ HP.

Options on any package

  • Remote outdoor condenser / compressor, or self-contained refrigeration in place of the indoor remote system.
  • Door placement and opening preference — which wall, which hinge side.
  • Outdoor installation of the walk-in freezer and its refrigeration.
  • Other sizes — panels are manufactured to your dimensions.
  • Glass doors for a display freezer — see display glass door walk-ins.

Walk-In Freezers FAQ

Does a walk-in freezer really need an insulated floor?

Yes, and it is included on every freezer we build. Concrete is not an insulator, so a 0°F box makes the slab cold too. Moisture in and under the slab freezes, expands and lifts the concrete — that is frost heave, it cracks the slab, and it throws the panels out of level so the cam-lock joints stop pulling square.

A cooler stays above freezing and cannot do this, which is why a cooler floor is optional and a freezer floor is not.

What temperature does a walk-in freezer hold?

We set the ideal holding temperature for walk-in freezers from 0°F to -10°F. The standard packages are specified at -10°F. If you have a special temperature requirement, or a product you need to bring down to a certain temperature in a certain time, tell us — the refrigeration is sized to it.

Why does the freezer have a door heater?

The door and frame are the coldest metal in the room the door opens into. Warm, humid air condenses on them and freezes, and a frame that ices up tears its gasket and freezes shut. Freezer doors and frames are therefore equipped with a perimeter heater wire — pre-wired on every package — and the box gets a mounted pressure relief vent.

Can you build a custom size?

Routinely. Walk-in coolers and freezers are manufactured in many different sizes and configurations to fit any space in your store, or outside it. Panels are made to your dimensions, so L-shapes, low ceilings and a box built around a column are normal work.

The real constraint is usually not the room but the route to it — measure your narrowest doorway, the tightest hallway turn and the lowest ceiling obstruction before you measure the space.

Can it go outdoors?

Yes. If you are limited in space inside your store you can install the walk-in outdoors. Outdoor installation of the box and its refrigeration is available on request, and the outdoor condensing units are in our refrigeration catalogue.

Is shipping really free?

Yes. Free shipping on every walk-in we quote, so there is no surprise on delivery day.

What do you need from me for a quote?

The inside dimensions you have to work with, the temperature you need, and what is going in the box. That is enough for a same-day number. Before anything is manufactured you receive a dimensioned approval drawing to sign off, so the details get confirmed in writing, not guessed.

Ready to size your freezer?

Send the inside dimensions and what you are freezing. You get a dimensioned approval drawing to sign off and a real number — usually the same day.
